Terrain and MapsCompetitors will receive two preprinted 11x17" maps in plastic bags, at 1:15,000 scale with 10 foot contours. The competition area is within the Chequamegon National Forest and is generally open forest with some recreational trails (single track mountain bike and wider XC-ski/hiking trails). The base maps were produced from USGS contour files. Some mountain bike trails follow and are depicted on the map as an old road grade. Beware that other road grades are shown on the map but are difficult to find or are no longer discernable in the forest. Some trails were recorded by GPS and added to the map in OCAD. These trails use the dashed trail symbol. The glacial terrain is rolling to steep hilly in nature and covered with open to moderately thick forest composed primarily of maple and oak with occasional stands of white pine. There are a number of small scenic lakes and ponds and many deep depressions. The complex features should lead to some interesting route choices and challenging navigation. FormatThis race has the following competition classes:
You will be asked to choose a competition class when you register. This event follows the usual Score-O Rogaine format. Controls may be visited in any order and will be worth 10 points each. The race cutoff time is 3:30 PM, regardless of the time the race starts. Every minute (or portion of a minute) past 3:30 PM will incur a 5 point penalty. Competition rules are based on those outlined by the Australian Rogaine Association, with the following changes:
Additional rules will be advised at the pre-start briefing on Aug 14th, and on this web site when available. SafetyTo ensure the safety and comfort of race participants, the following equipment is required:
Raingear is not required, but is strongly suggested if there will be any chance of showers. Waterproof map cases may be desirable if you plan to pre-mark your route. Whistles are only to be used for emergencies or injury situations. The standard distress signal is a series of three short blasts, followed by a pause, repeated until help arrives. All teams are required to respond to any distress signal. Teams that lose time as a result of responding to a distress signal may be awarded compensatory bonus points, at the race officials' discretion. The safety bearing is north to County M or alternatively, west when in the East section of the map or east when in the West section of the map to get to the gravel forest road that bisects the map. PotluckPlease plan to stay and swap stories over a potluck dinner. The potluck will begin at the Rock Lake Trailhead at 4:00 PM. There are no tables or shelter at Rock Lake Trailhead. Bring a dish to share and your camp chair. MNOC will provide lemonade, brats and burgers along with buns and condiments. Please check our online survey to diversify the menu of potluck offerings.
