Camp Ripley Orienteering WeekendOctober 17th and 18th, 2009A much anticipated and challenging weekend of orienteering with several different courses and lengths set in some of the best orienteering terrain available in Minnesota. This is the same location used for the 1997 Veterans World Cup Orienteering Meet. This event is conveniently being held on the weekend before the US Championships in Wisconsin. WHAT:Saturday - Massachusetts Score-O Western Massachusetts Rules Score-O is a timed event where competitors must get X of Y controls. This combination of regular-O and score-O allows the choice of which controls to visit and in which order. Three courses will be offered where competitors must get greater numbers of the total available controls for each level (5 of 16 for the easy, 10 of 16 for the medium, and 15 of 16 for the advanced). Competitors need not declare a class before starting, they will be scored for the best class possible for the number of controls found (e.g., 5 controls visited would be ranked in the easy class, while 12 controls would be ranked for the medium class. The fastest time wins for each class, no bonus is given for visiting extra controls. 1.5 hour time limit. Map at 1:10,000, 5 m contour interval. Control bags are numbered 101 through 116. Punch in boxes 1 through 16 using box 1 for 101 and box 2 for 102, etc.Saturday - Potluck Picnic Sunday - Minnegoat and Half Minnegoat Sunday - Orange course WHEN:Saturday October 17th: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM: Start Window for Massachusetts Score-O, these will be medium to short courses: about 5-6 km for the advanced, 3 km medium, and approximately 1 km for the easy. 4:00 PM: Picnic Area Potluck dinner Sunday, October 18th: 9:00 AM: Mass Start MinneGoat (approximately 15 km) and Half MinneGoat (approximately 8 km) 9:00 AM to 11 AM: orange course starts (3.5 km) WHERE:Camp Ripley is located north of St Cloud, MN. Take US Hwy 10 north to State Hwy 371. Take State Hwy 371 for approximately 14 miles. Camp Ripley is on the west side of the road. Proceed to main gate, check in with guard. (guard may require identification). Proceed to Range Control Building, which is directly north of main gate approximately 2.5 kilometers. At the Range Control building the driver of the vehicle must go in and obtain a vehicle pass card and pick up a Camp Ripley map which shows where starts and picnic area are. Approximate drive time from Mpls-St Paul is 2 hours to main gate. Allow an additional 50 minutes once inside Camp Ripleys main gate. COST:Regular MNOC fees apply for each event: $4 for junior members, $5 for members, $8 for non members (up to 4 people for one fee, additional maps $3) $1 off for each participant for online preregistration. Online registration is now open. There are no additional fees to enter Camp Ripley. Minnegoat T-shirts will also be available on first come, first served basis for $8 for Minnegoat participants. ACCOMMODATIONS:Barrack Building at Camp Ripley. We have reserved one building that has 20 coed bunk spaces. Cost is $5 per person. Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, etc. Register by emailing Mike Carlson for these limited barrack accommodations. Camping is available at Crow Wing State Park, north on 371 from Camp Ripley’s main gate. There is a Super 8 motel in Little Falls, approximately 10 miles south of main gate on Hwy 371. Camping and motel reservations are your responsibility. OTHER:Saturday picnic is potluck, so, bring a something to share, a salad or dessert (no chips please). MNOC will supply brats/dogs and lemonade. Ticks may be common. Pre-treating garments with permethrin type sprays such as Permanone is effective in repelling ticks. Liberal use of DEET repellants is also effective. Within Camp Ripley speed limit is 25 mph, strictly enforced. Course setter: Owen Baird Register online.
