June 15, 2003
The MNOC Team Adventure O is just one month away July 12 and the event is shaping up to be fun and challenging. Currently 23 teams have registered and I have commitments from several others. We originally wanted to have 4 person and 2 person coed teams only, but, there have been several people requesting an open class, so, I have decided to allow 2 person open class.

Break out is as follows:

  • 9 Coed 4 person teams
  • 8 Coed 2 person teams
  • 6 Open class 2 person teams

Event Expectations:

The race is calculated to be approximately 6 hours for most teams. However, if mistakes are made on navigation the forest and terrain is unforgiving.

The river section can be a little fast if there is rain prior to the race. There is one section that if there is a substantial amount of rainfall 1-2 days prior to the race, will have class II white water, there will be several class I areas. Keep in mind canoes and paddles will be furnished. Personal paddles are not allowed. Paddling section approximately 9 miles.

The biking section will include gravel roads and ATV/hiking trails. These trails are multi use trails, be prepared to meet a possible hiker or ATV rider. Mountain bikes or cross bike with aggressive tires are highly recommended. Trails will probably include mud/wet areas, though these areas will be limited to pockets. There are no technical mountain bike trails (big ups and downs, switchbacks, obstacles) Biking section approximately 15-18 miles.

The trek/hiking section will be through areas that are forested, swamp, ridge lines and rivers.  For fastest times you will be off trail, however, there will be route choices that can utilized trails as well. Control points will be on major land features. Orienteering difficulty will be no greater than orange level, however, that does not mean map reading skills are low. Trek section approximately 5-6 miles.

Maps will be USGS 1:24,000 scale. Additionally, these maps will be enhanced/updated by MNOC map designers to show trails and some man made features. Control points will be preprinted on the maps, so copying of CP's will not be necessary. Maps will be handed out at the start of the race, no other maps of the area are permitted.

The next update will include:

  • Schedule of events
  • Mandatory gear list
  • Team update

Friday night at 7 pm there will be a team meeting at REI, Bloomington. This meeting is currently listed as mandatory. However, if, there is a problem sending one person to this meeting contact me.

Any other questions please let me know.
