MNOC Board Meeting Minutes: July 2006

Date: July 19, 2006
Location: Ian Harding's house
The meeting was called to order at 9:02 p.m.

Present: Ian Harding, Julia Bohnen, Mike Carlson, Andrea Schneider, Vince Laraia, Julie Tanner Fischer, Chris Fischer, Arne Garvander, Gerry Bauer, Molly Johnston, Jerritt Johnston, Justin Bakken, Pete Curtis, Graham Baird, Steven Bullard, Sam Meddaugh

  1. Approval of Minutes

Julia made the motion to approve the May 2006 minutes, seconded by Mike, motion was accepted unanimously.

  2. Recent Events

Lake Elmo: Need results on web, Pete will update soon. Not as many participants as expected.

Lake Maria: Lost results except for red only.

Ney (members-only) 6/4: Formula worked well for members event, length was shortened compared to last year's event.

July 8 AR: Hot day, overall the event went well, in spite of no water in the river. There was need of an ambulance for a person with severe asthma; good response by the ambulance - within 12 minutes from the call. Also had one participant with a dislocated shoulder. Participants scored an extra hour for a missed control. If they missed the final control, they were marked as DNF. If controls were skipped, the team was assigned a penalty and ranked appropriately. Six to seven teams did not finish. Discussed whether the slower teams couldn't navigate or just slower or a combination? Event could be designed with a cutoff.

Clark County did a good job with the facilities. The Levis Mounds/Black River location may also work well for a future Rogaine: challenging, open woods, only issue would be avoiding cliffs. Clark County interested in permanent course; the site may also work for a mountain bike-o.

Feedback for event was that it was too difficult for beginners: was there a possibility for a short and long course? Committee had good discussion regarding this topic but agreed that because this event was one in a series of progressive MARS events, it would be better for beginners to try the 3 hour event that MARS has earlier in the summer, as well as other short AR's that are in Chicago or Madison. The administration of this navigation-intense race would be too difficult for a shorter course. MNOC could try to better publicize that it is an intermediate AR which is leading up to the MARS 12 and 24 hour races. Results are posted for this event.

  3. Upcoming Events

August 20th Rogaine at Pillsbury State Forest (12 registered so far): Baird setter/vetter - need controls. Camping is first come, first serve. There will be a focus on the social aspect - plan for staying the weekend, potluck, campfire, etc. Mapping going well,

William O'Brien 9/9: Pete Curtis to set; Mike Sherman to vet.

Willow River 9/24: Carl Nordgren setting/vetting.

Telemark 10/7-10/8: (format, setter - Jerritt) This event hasn't been set up formally with Telemark Resort - decided that it was not needed if using West End as entrance. If using northeast ski club entrance, would need permission from Bayfield County. Julia to doublecheck on insurance and permissions - northwest area would be more interesting. Jerritt has help from Paul Johnson with setting/vetting/directing meet - courses not set up yet - can run ideas by Ian or Mike for advice. There will be three mini-events : Sat pm (regular courses) . night-o Saturday evening (short and long w/mass start), and a sprint on Sunday morning.

Minnegoat 10/22: Keith & Colin Murphy H Need to set up online registration - same price as last year.

Nerstrand 11/4: Discussed what would happen if there were snow on the ground.

Hyland Park Adventure Runs (Stephen Bullard): Julia to call Hyland for permission. would need to be done by 10 p.m., about three dates sometime in September-October.

  4. Newsletter

Next press date will be September 12.

  5. Other

Said goodbye and thank you to Andrea Schneider (former MNOC secretary) as she is leaving the U.S. for three years.

  6. Publicity

Molly Johnston (new publicity officer) - asked how well is it going? Pioneer Press outdoor section seems to do well. Discussed questions: why isn't there more orienteering cross-over from adventure racing? Due to publicity? Other interests? Not relating to time lost? Is there a reason to change MNOC name for marketing value? Rogaine is a very misleading name. Why are some members spotty in attendance? Encourage participants at AR and Minnegoat to join MNOC events - are some discouraged by running through the woods? Orienteering may not be for everyone. Possibly reduce fee at Hyland to $5. Jerritt wrote an article for Silent Sports entitled, "Orienteering with a Family."

  7. Mapping/POCs

Standing Cedars: Had gotten $1200 bid; Ian thought we could beat it. We could do a USGS map with boundary and trails. No agreement has been finalized yet.

Camp St. Croix: has new map; both this site and the Tamarack Nature Center would be good sites for a night-o next spring.

Levis Mounds near Black River Falls, WI: good location for a Rogaine.

Eau Claire (Altoona): Tony Keys interested in mapping.

Como: Pete working on mapping a small course.

More discussion regarding creating maps and sources for checking.

  8. Miscellaneous

Some members planning on attending Fat Tire Tri in August. Jerritt teaching a few class sessions at his school on adventure racing.

Mike made the motion to adjourn, seconded by Julia.

The next meeting will be September 13, 2006 at Fischers' house.
The meeting adjourned at 10:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Julie Tanner Fischer
