OVERVIEW

MNOC is excited to host the OrienteeringUSA Masters National Championships at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park. This is a two-day, classic-format competition on Saturday and Sunday, October 9 and 10, 2021. The event will have scheduled starts based on pre-registration with day-of registration allowed until all time slots are filled. This event is open to all orienteers regardless of age or skill level and is a National Ranking Event for all age classes.

ABOUT MILLE LACS KATHIO STATE PARK

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is located in central Minnesota, approximately 2 hours from MSP airport (See google map here).  This park has very interesting intricate glacial kettle moraine terrain. It is also an area rich in Native American history as it is home of the Dakota people and site of the Petaga Point archeological site. Learn more about this fascinating park here!

COURSES

We are excited to provide a full complement of courses over two days. This is a two-day classic orienteering meet with White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Green, Red, and Blue Courses (All Skill Levels). To find out more about these courses, see our Event Types page.

TRANSPORTATION SCHEDULE:

Day 1: MNOC will arrange for busing from the parking lot to the event area. We anticipate a bus will arrive every 10 minutes. It is a 10 minute bus ride to the event area. Contestants should allot a minimum of 30 minutes prior to their start time for being on the bus.

Day 2: There will be no busing on Day 2. When possible, participants should attempt to carpool.

 

DAILY SCHEDULES

 

Friday, October 8

  • Packet Pickup: 1 - 5 pm (Location: Trail Center at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park) and 6 - 8 pm (Location: Eddy's Resort Banquet Room)

  • Model Event Area: open sunrise to sunset

Saturday, October 9

  • Bus Service Start: 8:30 am at the SouthWest Parking Lot (Visitors Center)

  • Registration/Packet Pickup: 8:45 - 11:30 am at the bus drop off.

  • Event Starts: 10 am - 12 pm

  • Course Close: 3 pm

  • Last Bus to Parking: 3:20 pm

  • Model Event Area: open sunrise to sunset

Sunday, October 10

  • Registration/Packet Pickup: 8:00- 11:30 am at the State Park Ranger Station 

  • Event Starts: Starts will be at two locations: BGRB 10 am - 12 pm & WYO 10 am - 10:30 am

  • Awards: 2:45 pm (Park entrance Ranger Station)

  • Course Close: 3 pm

  • Model Event Area: open sunrise to noon

AWARDS

US Masters Championship medals will be awarded to US citizens and US permanent lawful residents who are OUSA members in all age groups 35+. NOTE: Eligibility for national championship awards requires preregistration.

To receive awards in the Masters, one has to race both days in the same age and gender appropriate class. One can run up a class or more, but would have to run up in the same class both days.

MILLE LACS KATHIO VENUE MAPS AND EMBARGO NOTES

Model event maps are available for purchase when registering. MNOC will mail map orders place before September 19. Orders placed after that date will be included in your event packet.

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park remains under full embargo until Friday, October 8, when access is allowed for the use of the Model Event area. The park area bounded on the south by Kathio State Park Road, west of Shakopee Lake road, South of hwy 169, and east of Ogechie Lake is embargoed until the completion of competition on day 1. The park area East of Shakopee Lake Road, South of Hwy 169, and North of Shakopee Lake/Tamarac Road, with the exception of the flagged trail to the start area, is embargoed through the completion of the competition. The model event area is bound by the Kathio State Park Road to the north, Shakopee Lake road to the east, and on the west by a N-S line extending from the trail center North to Kathio State Park Road and South to the river.

If you booked your room(s) before this group code was available, simply call that phone number and ask them to add your room to the block of rooms and apply the discount. The Launch Bar and Grille will be open with limited hours and menu.

The Launch Bar & Grill at Eddy's Resort will be open:

  • Thursday  from 4pm until 9pm with the bar open until 10pm

  • Friday  from noon until 8pm with the bar open until 10pm

  • Saturday from noon until 8pm with the bar open until 10pm

  • Sunday from 4pm until 9pm with the bar open until 10pm

 

The 1991 Kitchen at Grand Casino will be open:

  • Friday from noon until 10 pm

  • Saturday from 10am until 10 pm

  • Sunday from 10 am until 4 pm

  • (as well as Plums that is open 24 hours a day)

 

A good breakfast option would be the Cedarwood restaurant in downtown Onamia. Eddy's also has an ala cart breakfast box menu that can be ordered the night before and put together for pickup in the morning

CHILDCARE

The club has made the decision not to provide childcare due to COVID. Organizers will accommodate start time requests for people who coordinate childcare with one another. Deadline to notify organizers about this need is September 28. Send message to registrar.

WATER ON COURSES

We will track and follow OUSA guidelines with respect to water and other things on the course. Be prepared to be self-supporting with regards to water on the course.

LOCAL COVID STATUS (UPDATE 9-9-21)

Restaurants are fully open. Masks not required for vaccinated, but required for the unvaccinated. Local businesses may have their own requirements regarding masks however and require all to be masked. Vaccinations are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED.

 

The current full-series vaccination level for the state of Minnesota (as of 9-9-21) is 67% for ages 12+. Mille Lacs county has a 49% vaccination rate for the same population.

RACE RESULTS

Unofficial live results will be available on a monitor at the event, and also posted online, pending an adequate mobile phone signal. Official race results will be published within 24 hours of the event. View our Race Results page to see the results.
